Following correspondence with stakeholders and additional guidance on the appropriate terminology from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, changes have been made to the Man Booker International Prize materials. The country/territory of longlisted authors and translators appears, and Wu Ming-Yi is listed as ‘Taiwan’. The prize is not about defining nationality; all global citizens are eligible, provided they are published in translation in the UK. Read more...

The trustees of the Booker Prize Foundation are aware that a letter is in circulation to be signed by publishers asking the trustees for a discussion around the decision to ‘allow American writers to enter the Man Booker Prize’. To date, the trustees have not actually received any such letter but a draft has been seen. Assuming that the content remains the same, the trustees are issuing this statement in response. The Man Booker Prize for Fiction announces a change in its rules of entry as the 2018 submission forms are sent to publishers today, 8 January 2018. As of 2018, a new rule has been added specifying that any novel written originally in English and published in Ireland by an imprint formally established in Ireland is now eligible for the prize. The philosopher, cultural theorist and novelist Kwame Anthony Appiah is today, 5 December 2017, named chair of the judges for the 2018 Man Booker Prize for Fiction, the most prestigious award for fiction written in English.
