A year after judging the Booker Prize, Rose Tremain was shortlisted for Restoration. She wasn’t done, however, and renewed her acquaintance with the prize in 2010 as a longlistee with Trespass.
Tremain is the author of 16 novels and five collections of short stories and was on the stellar 1983 Granta Best of Young British novelists list alongside future Booker Prize winners such as Kazuo Ishiguro, Ian McEwan, Salman Rushdie and Pat Barker. Her own books have won her a slew of awards, including a Whitbread award and the Orange Prize, and she has also taught at the University of East Anglia and served as its Chancellor. She has said that part of the allure of historic fiction is that it is a helpful genre: ‘You can make an accommodation with your own past.’
