The Stone Diaries chronicles the life of a Canadian woman, born in 1905 out of love and tragedy, and follows her life through marriage, motherhood and widowhood as she ages with the century.


About the Author

Carol Shields

Carol Shields was born in Chicago in 1935. She was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1993 for her novel The Stone Diaries which went on to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1995. Unless was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2002.

In addition to her novel writing she wrote two collections of short stories and a biography of Jane Austen. She won the Orange Prize in 1998 for Larry’s Party. Carol Shields died in 2003 at the age of 68.
