The Northern Clemency

Set in Sheffield, The Northern Clemency charts the relationship between two families: Malcolm and Katherine Glover and their three children; and their neighbours the Sellers family, newly arrived from London. The Northern Clemency is a portrait of Britain’s social landscape through the Thatcher era.

About the Author

Philip Hensher

Philip Hensher was born in 1965 and has written for The Independent and been art critic for The Spectator.

His novels include Other Lulus (1994), Kitchen Venom (1996), Pleasured (1998), The Mulberry Empire (2002), The Fit (2004), and The Northern Clemency (2008), and King of the Badgers (2011). In 2003, he was voted a Granta Best of Young British novelist. Hensher also wrote the libretto for Thomas Ades’s opera, Powder Her Face in 1995.

Since 2005 Hensher has taught creative writing at the University of Exeter. He has edited new editions of numerous classic works of English Literature, such as those by Charles Dickens and Nancy Mitford.
