Candia McWilliam was born in Edinburgh in 1955.
She is a novelist and reviewer, of fiction, biography and poetry, and has written a number of introductions to such classic works as the first three James Bond novels, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, A Wreath of Roses and The Golden Bowl. She has been lucky enough to have been the recipient of some literary prizes, including the Guardian Fiction Prize and the Premio Grinzane Cavour. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Her novels are A Case of Knives (1988), A Little Stranger (1989), and Debatable Land (1994).
She has also written a book of short stories, Wait Till I Tell You (1997). She has been on several prize-judging panels.
McWilliam has three children and lives in Oxford.
